{"id":1449,"date":"2020-05-10T07:51:47","date_gmt":"2020-05-10T11:51:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/?p=1449"},"modified":"2020-05-10T07:58:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-10T11:58:09","slug":"5-10-the-fifth-sunday-of-easter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/?p=1449","title":{"rendered":"5\/10 The Fifth Sunday of Easter: Mother&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u201cOnce you were not a people, but now you are God\u2019s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\">1 Peter 2.10<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/lily2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1450\" src=\"http:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/lily2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/lily2.jpg 160w, https:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/lily2-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During a time of temptation and confusion, Peter is encouraging the people who were drawn to alternate ways of receiving and sharing in the blessings of God, to hold fast to what they had been taught.\u00a0 Comparing them to \u2018newborn infants\u2019 he urges them on, reminding them that keeping the faith is a challenge and that stumbling is inevitable.\u00a0 He reminds them of their chosen-ness &#8211; by God to receive love and mercy.\u00a0 Today we celebrate Mother\u2019s Day as we give thanks for their love and mercy in bringing us into the world and sustaining us as we grew from newborn infants to wherever we find ourselves \u2013 young and growing children or still growing (hopefully! in many ways), adults.\u00a0 In the Gospel of John, Jesus speaks of being \u2018the way, the truth, and the life\u2019 and growing up I think we all found out at some point that Mama was similarly -way, truth, and life.\u00a0 As growing babes, it didn\u2019t take much faith to find that out especially when you strayed from the way \u2013 and a hind whooping was impending.\u00a0 But after the \u201ccorrection\u201d, the judgement was transfigured into the truth of love and mercy \u2013 and new life.\u00a0 A lesson learned for both mother and child.
