{"id":1520,"date":"2020-08-02T17:59:42","date_gmt":"2020-08-02T21:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/?p=1520"},"modified":"2020-08-02T18:00:49","modified_gmt":"2020-08-02T22:00:49","slug":"8-2-the-9th-sunday-after-pentecost-nothing-but-everything","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/?p=1520","title":{"rendered":"8\/2 The 9th Sunday after Pentecost:  Nothing but &#8211; Everything"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the disciples came to him and said, \u201cThis is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.\u201d Jesus said to them, \u201cThey need not go away; you give them something to eat.\u201d They replied, \u201cWe have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.\u201d And he said, \u201cBring them here to me.\u201d Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. <em>From the Gospel of Matthew<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>5000 PEOPLE AND HUNGER.\u00a0 Its out there, for many things, and we all have it.\u00a0 But we also have what it takes.\u00a0 Like the disciples we\u2019re finding ourselves at our limits \u2013 \u201csend them away to take care of themselves\u201d. We\u2019re in need today and the wide net of God\u2019s mercy thrown into the sea of life has caught us all- together.\u00a0 We have choices which we\u2019re free to make, or to ignore, to do something.\u00a0 And that\u2019s exactly what Jesus is telling us: YOU give them something.\u00a0 And our limitations and fears rise to haunt and paralyze us.\u00a0 \u201cWe have nothing here but\u2026\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 For the disciples it was nothing but 5 loaves and 2 fish.\u00a0 The gospel is telling us though, that we have what it takes \u2013 it takes our \u201cnothing but..\u201d It takes our Nothing but everything.\u00a0 And that\u2019s all Jesus wants \u2013 \u201cYOU bring it to me\u201d he says -bring me your nothing, empty, powerless everything and your needs- and see how power is made perfect in weakness and nothingness \u2013 see how my grace and mercy is sufficient for you \u2013 see what can be done when you bring your \u201cnothing\u201d to me. His sign \u2013 offering our \u201cnothing but\u201d to God and then offering it for all \u2013 the disciples receive their \u201cnothing but\u201d back and pass it along for everybody.
