{"id":1572,"date":"2020-10-25T07:21:55","date_gmt":"2020-10-25T11:21:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/?p=1572"},"modified":"2020-10-25T07:21:55","modified_gmt":"2020-10-25T11:21:55","slug":"10-25-the-21st-sunday-after-pentecost-divine-order-one-rule-one-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standrewsharlem.org\/blog\/?p=1572","title":{"rendered":"10\/25 The 21st Sunday after Pentecost: Divine Order, One Rule, One Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">When I was about 6 or 7 my older sister and my brother in law gave me a 12-inch ruler for my birthday.\u00a0 It was heavy and made out of gold colored metal.\u00a0 I remember unwrapping it and looking at it and from the look on my face I guess they knew I wondered \u201cwhat am I going to do with this\u201d.\u00a0 So, my brother in law said \u201cYou know what that is? It\u2019s the Golden Rule.\u00a0 Since I still looked puzzled, he said \u201cTurn it over and read what it says\u201d So I turned the inch marked side over and read out loud \u201cDo unto others as you would have them do unto you\u201d.\u00a0 He said \u201cThat\u2019s right \u2013 that\u2019s the Golden Rule.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">The ruler was made of brass and a bit heavy but I put it in my desk and used it to measure and when I needed to draw straight lines.\u00a0 With that brass ruler I could take measurements to compare and copy and I could \u201crule\u201d and mark my drawings or papers with straight lines: Nice, neat and perfect like an expert!\u00a0 I think some part of us all wants the world to be a place where everything is perfect, exact, clearly defined and in order. And we use all sorts of \u201crules\u201d to try to do that.\u00a0 But like my brass ruler, it only stretched so far \u2013 and then what?\u00a0 What do we do when we come to the end of the measure and the problem is bigger than the tools at hand?
